How to run a paid UGC pilot for a consumer app

By Infinite Pulse Media · Updated

A paid UGC pilot should answer a specific question: can creator ads produce the action your app needs, at a cost that is worth investigating further? Agree the event, scope and decision rule before commissioning content.

Choose the action before choosing the creative

An install, a signup and a paying customer are different outcomes. Pick one primary event for the pilot and track the steps after it. An inexpensive install can still be a poor result if people never activate or return.

For an app with a long onboarding flow, include activation in the review. For a subscription app, inspect the path from signup to paid conversion. If that measurement is missing, state the limit rather than calling the pilot profitable.

Write a brief that can be tested

DecidePut in the brief
AudienceWho needs the app, and the situation in which they would use it.
ConversionThe primary action, tracking owner and agreed success measure.
CreativeCreators, distinct angles, opening hooks and deliverables.
DistributionPlatform, placements, market and test budget.
ApprovalProduct claims, revisions and permission to run the content as ads.
DecisionWhat evidence would justify another round, a revision or stopping.

Make variations that teach you something

Brief a few distinct product situations rather than several versions of the same script. Within a promising angle, compare openings while keeping the rest of the video similar. Changing the creator, hook, offer and landing page together makes the result harder to interpret.

The first round may identify a useful angle rather than a stable acquisition cost. A promising creative needs another test before it becomes a reliable scaling assumption.

Read the full path to conversion

Review spend, impressions, clicks and the selected conversion together. Calculate cost per result as spend divided by the number of recorded results. Check how the ad platform and product analytics define and attribute that result before comparing their totals.

If people click but do not convert, inspect the message match, landing page, onboarding and event setup. Producing another batch of videos is only useful if creative is the problem you are testing.

Finish with a decision

For each angle, record what happened, what remains uncertain and what the next experiment would change. Continue when the signal justifies another controlled test. Revise when a specific part of the journey failed. Stop when the evidence does not support the next spend.

IPM starts with a defined pilot: creators, content, budget and success measures are agreed before launch. Discuss a pilot.
